Schenirer, Sarah

(1883-1935)
   Polish education-alist. Born in Krakow, Poland, she worked as a seamstress and became concerned with the lack of education for Orthodox women. During World War I she went to Vienna, but returned to Krakow in 1917 and opened a school in her home. In 1918 Agudat Israel adopted the programme for schools for girls. Under the name Bais Yaakov, it developed a network of institu-tions. In 1923 Schenirer began to train teachers for these schools. She also founded the Bnos Youth Organization.
